Conjunction (คำสันธาน)
คำสันธาน หมายถึง คำศัพท์ที่ใช้เชื่อมคำ (words) กลุ่มคำ (phrases) หรือ ประโยค (sentences) เข้าด้วยกัน โดยคำที่ใช้ conjunction เชื่อมนั้นจะเป็นคำชนิดเดียวกัน
หรือคำที่คล้ายกัน ดังตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้

หน้าที่ของ CONJUNCTIONS ใช้เชื่อมคำนาม กับ คำนาม เช่น
Dale and Joy got married.
เดลและจอยได้แต่งงานกัน (and เชื่อมคำนาม 2 คำ คือ Dale และ Joy)
ใช้เชื่อมคำนามกับคำสรรพนาม หรือเชื่อมคำสรรพนาม กับ คำสรรพนาม เช่น
Dale and I go to school by bus.
เดลและผมไปโรงเรียนโดยรถประจำทาง
(and เชื่อม Dale ซึ่งเป็นคำนาม และ I ซึ่งเป็นคำสรรพนาม เข้าด้วยกัน)
ใช้เชื่อมคำกริยา กับ คำกริยา เช่น
She eats and drinks.
หล่อนกินและดื่ม(and เชื่อมคำกริยาคือ eats และ drinks เข้าด้วยกัน)
She sat down and cried.
หล่อนนั่งลงแล้วร้องไห้ (นั่งร้องไห้)
ใช้เชื่อมคำคุณศัพท์ และ คำคุณศัพท์เข้าด้วยกัน เช่น
I have a black and white television set at home.
ผมมีทีวีขาวดำเครื่องหนึ่งที่บ้าน
(andใช้เชื่อมคำคุณศัพท์ black และ white เข้าด้วยกัน)
Ladda has a black and white cat at home.
ลัดดามีแมวสีขาวดำที่บ้านตัวหนึ่ง
ใช้เชื่อมคำกริยาวิเศษณ์ กับ คำกริยาวิเศษณ์เข้าด้วยกัน เช่น
He works diligently and patiently.
เขาทำงานอย่างขยันและอดทน
(and เชื่อมคำกริยาวิเศษณ์ diligently และ patiently เข้าด้วยกัน)
She reads slowly and carefully.
ฟหล่อนอ่านช้า ๆ และระมัดระวัง
ใช้เชื่อมวลี กับ วลี เข้าด้วยกัน เช่น
Dale went across the fields and into the woods.
เดลได้เดินข้ามสนามหญ้าและมุ่งตรงเข้าไปในป่า
(and ใช้เชื่อม วลี across the fields และ into the woods เข้าด้วยกัน)
ใช้เชื่อมอนุประโยค (clauses) หรือ ประโยค (sentences) เข้าด้วยกัน เช่น
Although she is not beautiful, she wants to be a film star.
แม้ว่าหล่อนจะไม่สวยแต่หล่อนอยากเป็นดาราภาพยนตร์

KINDS OF CONJUNCTIONS (ชนิดของคำสันธาน)
Conjunction สามารถแบ่งออกได้เป็น 4 ชนิดใหญ่ๆ ดังนี้
correlative conjunction
compound conjunction
coordinating conjunction
subordinating conjunctions
CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTIONS
Correlative Conjunction คือ คำสันธานที่ถูกนำมาใช้เป็นคู่ๆ (pair) มีดังนี้
either...or neither...nor both...and
not only...but also not…but though...yet
whether...or such...as as…so
so...as so...that such...that
as… as hardly…when no sooner...than
scarcely...when

Conjunctions
ชนิดคำสันธาน (Types of Conjunctions) มี 3 ชนิด คือ
1. Coordinating Conjunctions คำสันธานเชื่อมคำในประโยค
เนื้อความสำคัญเท่ากัน ทำให้ข้อความนั้นเกิดเป็น Compound Sentence คือ อเนกัตถประโยคทันที
2. Subordinating Conjunctions คำสันธานเชื่อมอนุประโยคกับประโยค
มีเนื้อความสำคัญไม่เท่ากัน เพื่อแสดงเหตุผล วัตถุประสงค์ เงื่อนไข ฯลฯ
ทำให้ข้อความนั้นเป็น Complex Sentence ทันที
3. Corrective Conjunctions คำสันธานที่ใช้เชื่อมเป็นคู่ๆ
เพื่อเพิ่มความหรือเพื่อเลือกความหมายของประโยคให้สมบูรณ์
2.1 Coordinating Conjunctions คำสันธานเชื่อมคำในประโยคมีความสำคัญเท่าๆ กัน
ได้แก่ and…but ( และ...แต่ว่า) however ( อย่างไรก็ตาม) therefore ( เพราะฉะนั้น) while ( ในขณะนั้น)
both…and ( ทั้งสองและ) also…too ( เช่นเดียวกัน) as well as ( เท่ากัน) not only but…also ( ไม่เพียงแต่ว่า)
either…or ( อย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งในสอง...) neither…nor ( ไม่...ทั้งสอง)
And: I was tired and hungry when I arrived home.
ฉันเหนื่อยและหิว เมื่อกลับถึงบ้าน
Both..and: She is both pretty and clever. เธอทั้งสวยและฉลาด
Jim both dances and sings. จิมทั้งเต้นรำและร้องเพลง.
He likes both English and French.
เขาชอบภาษาอังกฤษและฝรั่งเศส
She teaches English. He teaches English.
= Both She and he teach English.
เธอและเขาทั้งสองสอนภาษาอังกฤษ
Or: I'd better do it today or the boss will be upset.

But: We ran to the station. We missed the train.
We ran to the station but missed the train.
( พวกเราวิ่งไปสถานี แต่พลาดรถไฟ)
She saw me yesterday. I didn't greet her.
She saw me yesterday but I don't greet her.
( เธอพบฉันเมื่อวานนี้ แต่ฉันไม่ได้ทักทายเธอ)
Still, yet: ( กระทั่ง, จนกระทั่ง, ยัง)
Santi is very rich. He is very unhappy.
= Santi is very rich, yet , still , very unhappy.
( สันติร่ำรวย แต่ยังไม่มีความสุข)
Whereas, While ( ด้วยเหตุในขณะ)
Benja is clever while , ( whereas ) her brother is quite active.
( เบ็ญช์เป็นคนฉลาด ขณะเดียวกันพี่ชายของเธอค่อนข้างคล่องตัว)
Either…or: ด้วย...หรือ, ทั้ง....ด้วย
You must tell him truth. I must tell him truth.
= Either you or I must tell him truth.
( ทั้งคุณหรือฉันต้องบอกความจริงแก่เขา)
Either you'll leave my house or I'll call the police.
คุณจะต้อง ออกจากบ้านฉันหรือมิฉะนั้นจะเรียกตำรวจ
You apologize. I'll never speak to you again.
= You apologize or I'll never speak to you again.
( คุณจะต้องขอโทษ มินั้นฉันจะไม่พูดกับคุณอีก)
Neither…nor ทั้ง...ไม่
The businessman will neither spend his money nor invest it.
( ชายนักธุรกิจคนนั้นทั้งจะไม่ใช้เงินหรือลงทุน)
The Buddhist monks neither smoke nor drink beer.
( พระในพุทธศาสนาทั้งจะไม่สูบบุหรี่หรือไม่ดื่มเบียร์)
Otherwise, else: มิฉะนั้น , However: อย่างไรก็ตาม , so: ดังนั้น
You must apologize me, otherwise I will punish you.
( คุณจะต้องขอโทษฉัน มิฉะนั้นฉันจะลงโทษคุณ)
You must hand in your report by Monday. You will get on F.
= You must hand in your report by Monday Otherwise , you
will get on F. คุณจะต้องส่งงานภายในวันจันทร์มิฉะนั้น คุณจะติด F
However : He tried hard. He was unsuccessful.
= He tried hard; however he was unsuccessful.
( เขาพยายามหนักถึงอย่างไรก็ตาม เขาก็ไม่ประสบความสำเร็จ)
So: She has worked hard, so she will pass the exam.
( เธอขยัน ดังนั้นเธอจะต้องผ่านการสอบ)

คำสันธานคือ คำที่ใช้เชื่อมคำ วลี หรือประโยคเข้าด้วยกัน
1. Coordinate Conjunction คำสันธานเชื่อมข้อความเสมอกัน
Coordinate Conjunction คือ คำสันธานที่ใช้เชื่อม 2 ประโยคเข้าด้วยกันในลักษณะเสมอกัน คือถ้าแยกแต่ละข้อความออกจากกันยังมีความหมายเป็นที่เข้าใจได้

Subordinate conjunction คือ สันธานที่ใช้เชื่อม 2 ประโยคที่มีความสำคัญไม่เท่ากัน ประโยคที่อยู่หลังคำสันธานชนิดนี้จะเป็นประโยครอง ไม่สามารถแยกไปอยู่ตามลำพังได้ แบ่งออกเป็น 4 กลุ่ม
1. สันธานแสดงสถานที่
2. สันธานแสดงเวลา
3. สันธานแสดงเหตุผล
4. สันธานแสดงวัตถุประสงค์
สันธานแสดงสถานที่
ได้แก่ Where ที่ซึ่ง, wherever ที่ใดก็ตาม
